How Internet Marketing And Sports Made Me A Success

Man, I could visualize myself doing the same thing. I thought to myself "If only I could do that"! Later that year I decided to become a softball player.

Unfortunately it was alot harder than it looked. I joined a team that was near the bottom of the rankings, no one else wanted me. Why? Because I was a downright bad player. And I mean badly as in no good.

In fact I stunk! The only thing I had going for me was this fierce burning desire to succeed as a good softball player. The fire was inside me and I wanted to be "GOOD!" Now what does this have to do with Internet Marketing?

Just give me some time here and you will see where this is going. At 22 years of age I could not run, throw or hit. Nor did I have any special athletic abilities, at 5'7" and about 130lbs. I was not much of a softball player.

The team I joined used me very sparingly and rightly so. My butt was on the bench so often I was seriously considering buying pillows for my rear end.

The following year before the new softball season started. I purchased a book called "How to play slo-pitch-softball". This book was instrumental in my education and desire to become a good softball player. It had techniques on holding the bat, fielding, throwing, and running the bases. I read it thoroughly and followed its advice. That season I became a better player. I Spent much less time on the bench.

The next year I decided to become even better. I purchased a book called "Hitting a softball for distance and power" It thought me what exercises I needed for upper body strength, what type of bat to use for quicker more powerful swings. Clearly the following year I no longer sat the bench. I also purchased a book called "Leg exercises for speed". It took a few years but I became faster, quicker and stronger.

I was now in my late twenties and at 160lbs. a very good slo-pitch softball player. I had numerous teams asking me to play for them. Wow what a turnaround! It took me about 6-8 years to become a successful softball player. Now again you say what the heck does this have to do with Internet Affiliate Marketing?

Actually plenty. I am now in my mid fifties. At first I stunk at Internet Marketing just like I did at softball but I slowly began to get better. I read till my eyes burned and I still do. My website guzmansgreenhouse.com is now listed at the top for numerous keywords at google, yahoo and other top Search engines. Am I getting rich overnight? Absolutely not. I am making an extra income.

Just like soft ball I had this Burning desire to succeed. I had to read and follow the techniques in books, ebooks, and numerous pdf downloads on what I needed to become a successful "Internet Marketer". I studied learned and became familiar with HTML, CSS, PHP, and many other programs. I also joined forums, blogs, and article writing websites that would help me in my quest to become successful.

Just like softball I had to stay away from bad neighborhoods. If you've done any kind of marketing at all you know the horror of getting bad or wrong information.

It is my opinion that the best AFFILIATE PROGRAM everis still the AFFILIATE PROGRAM YOU own.

BUT

For those who are content in promoting other peoples programsI will share with you a few of my strategies for FREE!

But before I do that, lets see why most affiliates FAIL in just about any given affiliate program.

Like food products, affiliates have a use by date or expiry date. An average affiliate will expire 30 days after commencing 30 days or less to see if the program is any good and then they move on to the next affiliate program of the month.

If the affiliate doesnt see a return on there investment in the first two weeks then they will not stay around.

DONT BECOME A 30 DAY WONDER.

It is time to make an informed decision (in choosing your affiliate program) and sticking with it. If you are one of those netpreneurs who changes affiliate programs often, and not making money from it, you now know why it isnt working.

So before you go any further, make an informed decision (research) on the program you want to promote.

Now back to those STRATEGIES TWO STRATEGIES TO BE EXACT.

Strategy One

Very simple and straight forward, KNOW YOUR PRODUCT!

To know your product you need to USE IT, and know EVERYTHING there is to know about it. Its like going to watch a movie that you really, really enjoyed, you get this sense of excitement to share your great experience with others, well you need to get that same excitement about your product that only comes about by KNOWING YOUR PRODUCT.

Strategy Two

The Golden Question for all affiliates is How can I create an advantage for me?

The Answer: Incentive marketing

If you have never heard of Incentive marketing, you are sure to have been a victim of it in your every day life.

Think about it have you ever Up sized your meal at McDonalds, have you ever brought anything because of the Free Gift or Discount.

It doesnt matter that there are potentially thousands of other affiliates promoting the same program because from today onwards you are going to create an unfair advantage. 1.Fastclick: Fast click serves banner ads in a variety of different sizes. You choose the sizes you want and then just paste the code onto your website to begin showing the ads. Fastclick works on a cost per 1000 impressions (CPM) basis. That is, you get paid based on every time the ads are shown 1000 times on your website. You get paid whether or not anybody actually clicks on them! You get 65% of the revenue and Fastclick keeps 35%. The banner ads shown are very appealing with some well known companies that use it to advertise, including MSN, Ask Jeeves, Vonage, and Western Union. To the average layman visiting your site, it would look as though some great companies have personally chosen to advertise on your site bringing it some added credibility. I have seen and heard crazy things...ah! But how to build a website! In my endeavor and quest for success I have heard people ask weird questions and I have seen those professing to be internet gurus give astounding answers.

I know of a fellow who posted a question on yahoo answers. This particular question kept me staring at my monitor screen lost of words. This fellow had bought a domain name and registered it with one of the leading domain name registrar. His question was simple yet to those familiar with the art of online business, the question leaves a lot to be desired.

My friend was seeking advice on what to do with his domain name. He had no plans or ideas on what to do with it! Think of lack of planning and we don' t need to go further than this example.

To avoid being on the same predicament, here are 5 factors to consider as you ponder on your next move. Before you build a website, think about the following:

Type of web site.

Identify the type of web site you will be building. Are you going to build a website whose primary purpose is to sell hard good or e-goods? Would your site be composed of affiliate links or are you going to sell your own service or product? Is your web site going to be primarily informative in nature with google ad sense and other form of advertisement or is it going to be purely visual with little or no content.

Identifying the type of web site you are going to create will make the next step easy to identify.

Niche based.

Gone are the days when all a web master needed to do was to stuff their web site with links leading to all type of product and services. In the current internet world you can not succeed in building a web site designed in the form of a shopping mall with all kinds of goods and services.

The internet is increasingly and exponentially becoming a specialized super highway. Only those web sites that are able to distinguish them selves as authorities in a given area are poised to reap the benefits of online business.

Start out by identifying a profitable niche that you will enjoy writing about, identify an area that you already have experience on, have passion or will be comfortable learning about.

Only build a website in an area or niche that you believe in.

Research you market.

1. Have a professional, user friendly website.
Given that affiliate links can be placed just about anywhere these days you could be excused for thinking that you do not actually need your own website. How wrong you would be. A professionally designed and built site that contains plenty of information about the products it promotes is essential. Information or content is generally what your visitors are initially at least searching for. If that information interests them it may well promote a sale. People need to be enticed into clicking on your adverts with original, interesting articles, reviews and information. Get this right and you have won half the battle. Navigating around the site should be easy,efficient and logical too. Make it easy for your visitors to find what they want.

2. Freebies!
Offer your visitors something for nothing. Giving away newsletters, e-zines and newsletters for nothing other than the potential customers email addresses in exchange is actually a very good deal for you. You can follow these up by offering them further information, links and special offers. This will keep them interested and could lead to sales now or in the future. Remember your fiercest competitors will be doing just this and it would be professional suicide not to match or exceed their efforts. Therefore ensure that the content they read is relevant, informative, up to date and well written.

4. Originality
What are your main competitors offering, or more accurately what are they not offering? Find out what the gaps are in the market and target them with your campaign.This is not to be confused with focusing upon something peripheral but it does mean looking for something that whilst popular has not yet been marketed aggressively. This will give your site a certain edge over other affiliates. Try to develop too, your chosen niche in an innovative way on your website too. Originality of graphics, including clever use of typography or unorthodox layout techniques, video links,imaginative use of colour and distinctive, memorable logos all can create the interest that can hold your visitors attention long enough to get that sale and just as importantly get them to return for more.

There are of course many other ways to get your affiliate business off to a healthy start but remember that good marketing is something which is in a constant state of flux. It will be important not to rest on your laurels, because this is a line of business in which your main competitors will be watching your every move for sure!
